I Believe in the Power of Education

It’s no secret that it is one of my biggest dreams to become a teacher someday. The fact that someday rather soon I am going to become one is mind blowing to me. I can’t believe that soon I am going to be the one in front of the classroom teaching the minds of tomorrow. I am going to be teaching future doctors, lawyers, firefighters, businesspeople, scientists, and more. That is just woah to me. I am excited for my first day at my first job as a teacher because I know that it will be one of the best days of my life. Also, it’s because I believe in the power of education.

Education is powerful in this world. It gives us information and helps us understand it in ways that we might not have been able to before. Recently, I found this quote “Education is the movement from darkness into light”. That quote resonated with me and I began to think about it deeply. As I thought about it, I started to break down what each word might mean and how all of them connect. I started with darkness. To me darkness is about not being aware and missing information. When that happens, you can make assumptions without having all of the knowledge and information on the situation. Darkness literally means without light. When there is darkness it means that there is a lack of exposure. Well, then the next thing to break down is what light might means. Light is the awareness, having that information to make an evidence-supported statement about the situation. It’s quite literally the opposite of the darkness. However, when you’re in the light you’re exposed to even more ideas and thoughts that you may not have expected. Education is what carries the person through that journey, and education means the teaching of knowledge. Basically, giving the facts of the situation. Movement is the process of being educated, it’s the teaching from the teacher, the learning and understanding from the student. This quote means that education is the tool in which people are exposed to information.

Without information, people are kept in the dark. When we teach them, they are shown and put into the light. That light in this world where there is information and knowledge about the topic. That can lead to more acceptance, tolerance, and inclusion of others. Sometimes we aren’t these things because we aren’t educated. We don’t know how to be those things because nobody showed us how or why it was important. Education is that tool that can teach us how to be those things and more.

Without education, we could be living in an even worse world. With education, we can better our world and we can change it for the better. I want to better this world through education. It’s why I want to be a teacher and it’s why I believe in the power of education.
